Bright and bold lips are EVERYWHERE at the moment and are commanding our attention. From the latest runways to yesterday’s Emmy awards a punchy pout is this season’s look you need to try.

Here’s why:

1. You can be (fairly) lazy with the rest of your makeup. When rocking a colourful lip you should only have to spend no more than a minute on your eye makeup. Keeping your eyes very subtle lets your lips do the talking in more ways than one. Just a couple of coats of mascara and a brow groom is all you need. Try our Perfect Lash Mascara in Black and Brush-on Brow. To take your look from day to night, add a slick of Liquid Eye liner for extra glamour.

2. If you are tired, or just feeling a little bit blah, bright lips are perfect for drawing attention away from the eyes cleverly disguising any indiscretions and making the face appear fresh and wide awake, and;

3. I will guarantee that you’ll receive at least 3 compliments for your bold choice of colour and who doesn’t love that?

So what colours should you give a go? Our season favourites are Hollywood (an orange-red classic), Tourmaline (a playful fuscia) and Cloudberry (a luscious berry wine hue).

Here’s how to get a power pout:

1. Chapped lips are disastrous when trying this look and will only be exaggerated so smooth kissers are key here. Using a soft bristled toothbrush or face cloth, gently buff lips to get rid of any dry and dead skin. Add a small amount of nourishing lip balm to moisturise and protect.

2. A clever little trick at this stage is to apply your regular face primer not only to your t-zone but also on and around your lips. This will ensure that any lines will be smoothed out and your perfectly painted pout will stay just that sans the dreaded bleeding that causes most of us to shy away from lipstick of any hue. Using a face primer will also help colour to stay on for longer.

3. Next, line your lips in a matching lip liner. Don’t be too heavy handed and make sure not to go outside your natural lip line. Then fill the entire lip in. This is important as you want your lip liner and lipstick to blend seamlessly. Remember that dark liner/pale lip combo from the 90’s? Not such a good look in 2012.

4. With your chosen lipstick colour and a lip brush apply 2 layers blotting with a tissue after each time. This will give your colour intensity and also extra staying power. Matte lips are also huge this season so this blotting technique will take away any extra shine leaving you with a desirable stained effect that’s so hot right now.

So go ahead, be bold and rock a power pout. I assure you it is the easiest makeup look going around that packs the brightest punch.
